SURVIVING MOSPORT

In June, I had a glorious DE (Driver Education) session at Mosport, (Canadian Tire Mosport Park), with the Toronto UCR (Upper Canada Region) group. I had recently made several modifications to my car, and having enjoyed these dramatic improvements on the road, I wanted to test the changes on the track. I enrolled with my pal Terry, and though we are both 'signed off' drivers, we entered the instructed Yellow run group.

Navigating the Learning Curve

while descending the Slippery Slope

As my first season of Driver Education came to a close, I reflected on the incredible journey of learning that I had enjoyed in the Rennsport DE events. At my advanced age of 66, developing a consuming passion is not an easy task. Many of my peers are overwhelmed with negative thought patterns of declining health, financial insecurity, marital issues, angst about their children, and many other sad topics. To the uninitiated, the experience of driving on a racetrack is an abstract fantasy, but for those fortunate enough to participate in DE events, their lives change irrevocably. To learn is to grow!

My first DE,  "ANTICIPATION, DEJECTION, REDEMPTION"

In 2009, after a lifetime appreciating sports cars, I finally decided to satisfy a long held dream, and acquire a red Ferrari. At age 7, my first Dinky toy was a Ferrari, and I spent my adolescence making Ferrari models, and reading about Wolfgang Von Tripps, Phil Hill, et al. Thereafter, owning a Ferrari was a lifelong dream, and a logical indulgence to make a reality.

After intense research amongst the various mechanics and experts that I knew, and as an industrial designer, it soon became obvious that a Porsche was a far superior product. In the 70’s, I had two 914’s, the baby Porsche, yet I had always lusted after a ‘real’ Porsche, a 911. I had been aware of the early 911’s tendency to oversteer, so I prudently convinced myself that an all wheel drive model was my best option.

CIRCUIT MONT-TREMBLANT
TECH INSPECTION

A tech inspection form must be completed before your arrival at the track within 30 days prior to the event. The technical inspection is good for an event only no matter the number of days between events.

SAFETY DEVICES

1. SNELL 2005 (M or SA) or newer helmets are mandatory.
2. Fire extinguishers must be ABC or BC rated, at least 2.5 LB capacity and mounted metal to metal within the driver's reach. The fire extinguisher is not necessary for your first DE.
3. Open Car Roll Bar Ruling (996, 997, 991 Cabriolets & Boxsters excluded): All open cars must have a roll bar. It is also recommended that the roll bars are to be padded in any area that may come in contact with the occupant(s)’ helmet.
4. Open cars must have adequate roll bars (see above) and tops must be closed and latched. Saratoga tops are not permitted and sunroofs must be closed and latched when you are on the track.
5. Similar restraint systems must be utilized for both driver and passenger.
6. Only an instructor or their student may be a passenger in a car.
7. All timing devices are forbidden at the track.

AT THE TRACK

1. START TIME: The track gate will be opened at 7:00 AM. However you must be at the track by 7:15 AM and be prepared to stay until completion of the day's activities.

2. TRACK ENTRY: When you arrive at the track you will be required to sign a PCA INSURANCE LIABILITY RELEASE (Waiver) form and a track waiver form.

3. CAR NUMBERS:
Your assigned car number must be displayed on both sides of your car in numbers at least 4" tall.

4. TECH INSPECTION:
A final tech inspection of your car will be performed at the track and must be completed before your car is permitted to run (every day). The tech line will be open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 AM. If you arrive late, you will miss the entire morning sessions and your car will be inspected at the convenience of the tech chairman at lunch.

5. CAR PREPARATION:
Have your completed tech form (all the info requested must be filled) ready for collection. Car numbers must be affixed. Remove loose objects and hubcaps before entering the tech line. The following items must be removed prior to tech inspection and will not be allowed on track: Radar detector, video camera G-Analyst and cellular phone,. Gas and compressed air may not be available at the track

6. DRIVER MEETING:
 ALL participants must attend the drivers meeting. The meeting will start at 8:10 sharp.

7. INSTRUCTORS: 
Driver education procedures require that an instructor be permitted to drive the student's car in those run groups that need instruction. If you are driving with an instructor, you must be comfortable with the instructor's driving and teaching techniques. If you are not comfortable with your instructor, you may request that another be assigned to you.

8. PASSENGERS:
Passengers are not permitted in any car at any time except for instructors, or a student in an instructor's car.

9. CLOTHING:
Appropriate clothing must be worn for driving. Slacks should not interfere with foot movement. Protective driving gloves are recommended. Suitable shoes, such as sneakers, should be worn. No sandals, wedges, high heels nor loose shoes will be allowed. 100% cotton or nomex materials are recommended.

10. STAGING:
The staging area varies from location to location.. Do not leave cars unattended in this area. Use your time in staging to make final adjustments to helmets, seats, seat belts and mirrors 

11. RUN GROUPS:
Participants are placed in run groups on the basis of their driving experience. If you have any questions about your assignment, please raise them at the chief instructor after the driver’s meeting. 

12.
TWO SPIN RULE: ANY DRIVER WHO LEAVES THE TRACK, SPINS OR IS NOT IN CONTROL OF HIS OR HER CAR MUST RETURN TO THE CONTROL TOWER AND WILL RECEIVE A BLACK FLAG. IF YOU RECEIVE TWO BLACK FLAGS DURING THE EVENT, YOU WILL BE EJECTED. IF A STUDENT SPINS, THE SPIN COUNTS AGAINST BOTH THE DRIVER AND THE INSTRUCTOR. 

13. ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT: 
Anyone deemed to be conducting themselves or driving their vehicle in an unsafe and discourteous manner would be ejected from the event. Safety is a primary concern throughout the event. This is NOT a time event or a race practice.

14. ALCOHOL AND DRUGS: No alcoholic beverages
may be consumed by any person during the driving schedule (7.00 AM to 5.00 PM). The use of drugs is strictly prohibited. 

15. RISK OF DAMAGE: 
Participants assume all risk of damage to their cars and to the track facilities during the event. 

16. VOLUNTEERS:
This is a volunteer event. Participants may be asked to help our during the event.

MEALS

No meals are included in the registration fee. The Tremblant, village is close (1.5 Km) and offers many restaurants. There is also a catering service that will open the restaurant at the track for lunch.

TRAVEL INFORMATION

1. Speed limit in Canada is 100 KPH (62 mph).
2. Radar detectors are illegal in Quebec & Ontario. Display of a detector can lead to confiscation and a stiff fine. DETECTOR DETECTORS ARE IN USE SO BEWARE
3. Seat belt use is mandatory for all occupants front and rear.
4. You may be asked to provide proof of citizenship at the border. A driver's license may not suffice.
5. A Canadian NON-RESIDENT card is required for each registered vehicle that you bring into Canada. This card may be obtained from your insurance company without charge.
6. Race cars and non-registered vehicles may encounter problems with Canada Customs. You may be required to post a bond upon entering the country. Please contact Customs for information.
7. Open exhausts are not permitted. Owners of modified cars should have silencers and be below the allowed maximum noise level. (92DB)

DIRECTIONS


Mt. Tremblant is located 125 km (75 miles) northwest of Montreal near the town of St-Jovite. 

From Montréal: Laurentian Autoroute (15) north to Ste-Agathe. Continue north on (117) past St-Jovite. Exit at Montée Ryan, at the light turn right.. At the round about, turn left on (327) and drive through the village of Mont-Tremblant. Turn right on Séguin street (at Tremblant Ski Service) and enter via the Paddock entrance to the track.

From Ottawa: An alternate route is (148) from Hull to Montebello, turn left onto route (323) and continue into St-Jovite. Turn left on (327) and drive through Mt-Tremblant to Séguin street. Turn right on Séguin to reach the paddock entrance.

Notice: Please respect the speed limits on your way to the track and around the village of Tremblant. Also please minimize exhaust noises, especially early in the morning.
