Updated DE Safety rules

Print

Hello fellow Rennsport track addicts

PCA has updated the DE safety rules effective January 1, 2019. The specific rule change only affects DE participants that use harnesses during DE sessions. Starting January 1, 2019 DE participants using multi-point harness systems will be required to utilize a head and neck restraint (HNR) system, commonly referred to as a HANS device. The HNR must meet the standards of either SFI 38.1 or FIA 8858. This rule applies to all PCA Regional DE’s.

Because the rule of equal restraint always applies, if a driver uses a harness system there must also be a harness system available and used by the passenger. Thus, both the driver and passenger will be required to use a HNR device.

There are several types of HNR devices available on the market i.e.; traditional HANS and Hybrid models. The choice and proper fitting of a HNR device is critical to the overall performance of the complete safety system.

The following links are provided to help understand and assist you in choosing the appropriate
type of device. Please take note there are many other sources of information available.

- The need for a HNR and how do I choose one?

- A bit of a long winded video, good discussion of ingress and egress and helmet posts of the various
types of devices, starts at 1:44 and ends at 50:16 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfnNPC15-NY&amp=&t=3171s&amp=&frags=pl%2Cwn

We encourage you to consult the following Rennsport Partners to assist you in the selection of the proper HNR device for you.

AGM PERFORMANCE INC. (WETUNE) 1900 Norman Rd., Lachine, Que, (514) 633-1497 http://www.wetune.ca

If you use multi-point harnesses you will be required to bring your HNR device along with your helmet to the “Techline” as part of the overall safety inspection. The use of a HNR will also be verified at Staging. A grace period for the May DE event will be permitted after which HNR devices shall be required. Please see the PCA announcement below and the following link to the PCA DE Minimum Standards; https://www.pca.org/driver-education-minimum-standards

If you have any questions regarding this rule change or any other DE safety related questions please contact me at drivingevents@rennsport.ca or at 514-770-1961

See you in the curves.

PCA Chief Driving Instructors and Region Officials,
The number one priority of PCA's HPDE Program is track safety. A core belief in the DE program is that a person can purchase a stock Porsche and take it to the track for an HPDE weekend, after an appropriate tech inspectionof course.

Some people choose to modify their cars to increase performance and others to increase safety. A popular modification made to track cars is the addition of a multi-point harness system. Starting January 1, 2019,
the DE Minimum Standards will be expanded to state that if a driver uses a harness system, he or she will ALSO be required to utilize a head and neck restraint system, commonly referred to as a HANS device.
A head and neck restraint device is an integral part of the harness system. Because the rule of equal restraint always applies, if a driver uses a harness system there must also be a harness system available and used by
the passenger. Thus, both the driver and passenger will be required to use a HANS device. We highly encourage all DE participants to not wait until 2019 to comply with this new minimum standard. Head and neck restraint system devices are now more affordable and easily purchased online.

The DE Committee's decision was made over the course of two years after careful review of options, conversations with DE participants and discussion of a variety of perspectives. Please pass on this information to your DE drivers and instructors as soon as possible to avoid any confusion.

Thank you for all your time and effort to make your region’s DE program a safe and successful one.
