Blue Light Special
I’m writing this in the “dark” part of the year, you know, it’s
dark when you go to work and it’s dark a couple hours after lunch. Our
headlights get a workout until the days get longer. I mentioned
Litronic headlamps in my last rant about fog light misuse and I’ve
gotten email about them.

Sorry about last month. The real world interfered and I got buried. I’m

RSR Rendez-vous June 1999
Rain Rain Go Away –
What a spring, the summer weather has brought out Porsches from storage much earlier than usual. Too bad it didn’t hold for Instructor’s Day at Tremblant last weekend. About 28 of us braved the predicted rain and severe thunder storms to meet at Le Circuit at 8:00 AM. What greeted us was a huge cloud of black flies and mosquitoes! It was pretty evident that the early summer had been good for their breeding program. Only a few people were smart enough to bring bug spray. I wasn’t one of them.

RSR Rendez-vous June 1999 Parade
One Lap of Tremblant!
Parade goers, here’s an insider’s guide to the twisty maze of challenging
turns that make up Le Circuit. Elsewhere in this issue you’ll read about its history. From a driver’s perspective, this track is the one of the most difficult ever built. To appreciate how tricky it is, you have to walk it. There are visible and invisible challenges in every section. From inside a car, you won’t even see the subtle rises and dips but the “seat of the pants” will tell you that your car feels off balance. Even the straights are cunningly bent. Once you figure out how to drive it, the experience is very rewarding.

RSR Rendez-vous July 1999
Track Season ’99:
What a start to the driving season! Ground/skid school was a blast.
Perfect weather and a large turn-out. Mike Delaney and Peter Korsos
did a great job organizing things in spite of a conflict with the
autocross school. Mike also turned out to be a great chef.

RSR Rendez-vous September 1999
Cheese Whiz or crunchy peanut butter?
You may recall two months ago I was (as usual) whining about not (as
usual) winning the tires at the June DEW. Al Carbone won them and
he was sitting right across from me. I complained about how Al
ungraciously gloated. He read the column and wrote the following
email. Normally I don’t publish correspondence . In this case I’m
making an exception because the spelling is good and, it was not
written in crayon. Besides, Al has a fine sense of humor.

RSR Rendez-vous October 1999
The Tires!
This is written only days after the August DEW. For once, I felt lucky. I
had omens of great portent, for example, I dropped a slice of bread and it
landed butter side up! On Saturday I had a student. Her power steering
decided to let go as we turned around the tower onto pit lane – before we
went on the track!

RSR Rendez-vous November 1999
My New Race Car:
I’ve taken the plunge. Budget be damned! I bought a race car. Not
just any race car mind you, a Porsche GT1 in Le Mans trim. As this
is written it sits in my garage. It needs some work. Some vital
organs are sitting in boxes and have to be installed. The alignment
is totally shot and I’ve never seen so many suspension adjustments
on a car in my life. I’ll have it together by spring though,
probably before.

RSR Rendez-vous December 1999
Boxster S delayed:
Well the rumor turned out to be true. No Boxster S for summer 1999. Earliest
deliveries will be late ’99 – early spring 2000. I’m bummed because I ordered
one. The Boxster is one of the sweetest handling cars on the planet. It lacks
only a little more horsepower but then, what car wouldn’t be better with 50 HP more?

RSR Rendez-vous January 2000
About the time you’ll see this, we’ll know whether the Y2K bug is real or not. If it is, then you’ll be busy lighting candles and fighting off hordes of vandals trying to get your food and water. If that’s the case, put this aside, it can wait.
